Te Pou

Where strong relationships exist, anything is possible

Te Pou is New Zealand's National Centre of Mental Health Research, Information and Workforce Development.

A wholly owned company of WISE Trust and funded by the Ministry of Health, Te Pou is charged with creating a mental health hub for New Zealand.

Te Pou’s key objectives are:

  • to build a strong and enduring workforce to deliver mental health services to all people; and
  • to develop a culture of continuous quality improvement in which information and knowledge is welcomed and used to enhance recovery and service development.

Te Pou has three streams or programmes of work – workforce, research and information. Le Va, the Pacific Islands mental health and addiction workforce development unit within Te Pou, has also recently been launched. Its vision is to have vibrant Pacific leadership and well Pacific families.

At a certain level these programmes are discrete, but they are also inter-connected. The new knowledge that is being gained in research will inform our activities to develop the mental health workforce. The understandings that come out of knowledge will eventually be used to inform and guide all our projects.

All of the programmes are charged with running a dynamic series of mental health projects that add value to the sector now, and assist in creating services to meet future needs.

By sparking new growth, ideas and innovation, Te Pou will strive to engage the hearts and minds of everyone connected with mental health services.
